4510.1 TECHNOLOGY ACCEPTABLE USE
POLICY -- FACULTY AND STAFF
Electronic
mail and the use of telecommunications is becoming an essential tool for
faculty and students in the Katonah-Lewisboro School District. Like all powerful tools, telecommunications has
the potential to damage as well as to assist.
This Board of
Education policy addresses issues of privacy and responsible use. It states the District’s right to access and
disclose the contents of electronic communications, but also sets forth the requirements
for prior approval of such access.
In 1986,
Congress passed the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) that made it
illegal to intercept electronic communications on a public or private network
without proper authorization.
Essentially, one has the same privacy protection as with telephone
calls. System operators of public
networks are not permitted to divulge the contents of messages except under a
narrow set of circumstances.
Permissible Uses of
Electronic Communications:
The use of any
District resource for telecommunications should be related to District
business.
Only faculty,
staff, students, and other authorized persons conducting District business may
use the electronic communications system.
The
District’s networks, work stations and telecommunications shall not be used for
personal commercial purposes.
Incidental and occasional personal use of telecommunications may occur
when such use does not generate a direct cost for the District. Other prohibited electronic communications
include, but are not limited to:
·
sending
copies of documents in violation of copyright laws or any other laws
·
capturing
and “opening” of undeliverable electronic communication except as required in
order for authorized employees to diagnose and correct network or computer
problems
·
using
telecommunications to intimidate others or to interfere with the ability of
others to conduct District business
TECHNOLOGY ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY -- Policy No. 4510.1
FACULTY AND STAFF
·
constructing
electronic communication so it appears to be from someone else
·
obtaining
access to the files or communications of others without any authorization or
with no legitimate District business purpose
·
attempting
unauthorized access to data or attempting to breach any security measures on
any electronic communication system.
All faculty and staff
should realize that no electronic messages are fully confidential.
Faculty and
staff will apply the same Technology Acceptable Use Policy expected of our
students to their own use of school district technology:
·
Telecommunications
are only to be used for education, research related to the curriculum, or
school-related, administrative purposes.
·
Faculty
and staff may not use District computers to seek information on, obtain copies
of, or modify the files, other data or passwords belonging to other employees.
·
Faculty
and staff may not destroy, modify, copy, damage, or abuse hardware and software
on District computers in any way.
·
Faculty
and staff may not use District telecommunications for commercial or for-profit
purposes, for product advertisement, or for political lobbying, of for any
charitable, religious, or not-for-profit activities not sponsored by the
District.
·
Faculty
and staff may not use District telecommunications for antisocial activities
(e.g. hate mail, harassment, profanity, obscenity, discrimination,
misrepresentation, impersonation).
·
Faculty
and staff may not use District telecommunications for illegal activities or to
send, store, or access pornographic and inappropriate materials or files which
are dangerous to the integrity of the network.
TECHNOLOGY ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY -- Policy No. 4510.1
FACULTY AND STAFF
·
Faculty
and staff may use only school approved software or view material on District
computers that is related to the District’s curricula or teacher project.
·
Faculty
and staff are not to make copies of software found on District computers.
·
Faculty
and staff are not to create any home pages or web pages except with the express
consent of authorized District persons.
·
Faculty
and staff shall not incur any financial obligations on behalf of the District
through the use of District telecommunications except with the consent of
authorized District personnel.
